Professor Tieniu TAN

National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition, Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences

Tieniu TAN received the BSc degree in electronic engineering from Xi’an Jiaotong University, China, in 1984 and the MSc, DIC, and PhD degrees in electronic engineering from Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, London, UK, in 1986, 1986, and 1989, respectively.   He joined the Computational Vision Group, Department of Computer Science, at the University of Reading, England, in October 1989, where he worked as Research Fellow, Senior Research Fellow, and Lecturer.   In January 1998, he returned to China to join the National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition, the Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing.   He is currently Professor and Director of the National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition as well as President of the Institute of Automation.  He has published widely on image processing, computer vision and pattern recognition.  His current research interests include speech and image processing, machine and computer vision, pattern recognition, multimedia, and robotics.   Dr. Tan serves as referee for many major national and international journals and conferences.  He is an Associate Editor of Pattern Recognition and of the IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, as the Asia Editor of Image and Vision Computing.   He was an elected member of the Executive Committee of the British Machine Vision Association and Society for Pattern Recognition (1996–1997) and is a founding co-chair of the IEEE International Workshop on Visual Surveillance.
